Chicago Christmas Lights 2026: Nine Displays, and Two That Will Tell You the Price

Every guide to Chicago's Christmas lights lists the same nine displays. We read all nine organisers' own pages to find out what they cost, and seven of them will not tell you.

Short answer

  • Nine displays get listed everywhere. 2 of the 9 publish what they cost: the city tree, which is free, and ZooLights.
  • 6 of the 9 readable pages ranking for this search contain no dollar figure at all, including the city's own tourism office.
  • The one page in the top ten that does give prices is a charter bus company selling its lights tour.
  • The cheapest ticketed display, ZooLights at $7, is also the only one publishing a full price ladder. That is not a coincidence.
  • The season opens on 7 November, 13 days before the Friday most guides treat as the start.

01The short version

If you want lights and you do not want to pay, the city tree in Millennium Park and the Magnificent Mile's lit trees are both free and fifteen minutes apart on foot. If you want a full walk-through display, ZooLights is the cheapest at $7 booked ahead.

Everything beyond that is harder to answer than it should be, and that difficulty is the real story of this search.

02Nine displays, two prices

We read the nine pages that rank for chicago christmas lights and the nine were remarkably consistent: the same zoos, the same gardens, the same parade. Then we counted the dollar signs.

6 of the 9 contain no price at all. That includes choosechicago.com, the city's own tourism office, which spends 2,134 words listing nine displays without quoting a single figure, and themagnificentmile.com, which actually organises one of them.

The one page in the top ten that does publish prices is a charter bus company selling its own lights tour. Which is a reasonable thing for a bus company to do, and a strange state of affairs for everyone else.

So we went to the organisers instead, the people who actually take the money. It turns out the guides are not being lazy. Most of the organisers do not publish a price either.

Chart of nine Chicago Christmas light displays, each read from the organisation that runs it between 30 September and 8 October 2026. Two publish a price: the City of Chicago Christmas Tree, which is free, and ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo at $7 to $12 booked ahead and $20 at the gate on the night. The other seven publish no price: the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, Holiday Magic at Brookfield Zoo which gives only a starting figure of $29.95, Lightscape at the Chicago Botanic Garden, Illumination at the Morton Arboretum, Winter WonderFest at Navy Pier, Christmas Around the World at the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, and Santa's Rock n Lights.
Gold means the organiser publishes a price on its own page. Grey means it does not. Read between 30 September and 8 October 2026.

Each read from the organisation that runs it, between 30 September and 8 October 2026. The two highlighted rows are the only two that publish a price at all.

The two gardens are the interesting ones, because they are the most elaborate displays and the least forthcoming.

Lightscape at the Chicago Botanic Garden is the only organiser that explains itself. Its page says it uses plan-ahead pricing and that ticket prices may increase based on demand, so you have to pick a date and an entry time before a number appears. The one figure it will commit to is that on gold, blue and purple dates many tickets are currently under $30. It also charges $10 to exchange a ticket, per transaction rather than per ticket.

Illumination at the Morton Arboretum is stranger. Its page prices the new model railroad at $7 for members and $9 for the public. It prices premium parking at $18 a vehicle. It prices a four-course dining dome at $60 a head. It does not price getting in.

A warning about Navy Pier, because we nearly got caught by it. Its own /winter-wonderfest/ link redirects to a press release from 2023, announcing a rebrand to Light Up the Lake that it has since reverted. Follow that link and you get three-year-old dates presented as current. Its live events page still says Wintrust Winter WonderFest. We are not republishing the 2023 dates and we have no 2026 price, because there is not one.

One more naming trap while we are here. The Museum of Science and Industry is now the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry, and msichicago.org redirects to griffinmsi.org. Christmas Around the World lives there, and that page carries no price either, only a link to a ticket page.

5.00 · 5 reviews

Two hours covering the Mag Mile lights, the city's official Christmas tree, Macy's windows and the Millennium Park rink, with front-of-line access to the Christkindlmarket. Worth being straight about what this is: every light on its route is free to stand under, so you are paying Bobby's Bike, Hike & Food Tours - Chicago for a guide and a route, not for access. Two caveats from its own listing: 5 reviews is almost no evidence either way, and it says minimum numbers apply and it may be cancelled after confirmation, which in late November is a real risk.

04The cheapest is the one that tells you

Line the nine up and a pattern falls out that we did not expect. The display with the clearest, most complete pricing is also the cheapest one.

ZooLights publishes the lot: $7 to $12 if you book a fixed date ahead, $20 if you turn up and buy on the night, $20 for a flexible ticket good any evening, and four free Mondays with the exact dates printed. You can work out what an evening costs before you leave the house.

Brookfield, at $29.95, publishes a starting figure and stops. The two gardens, which are the priciest-looking displays of the nine, publish nothing you can plan with. We are not going to claim that is deliberate, because we cannot see inside anyone's pricing decisions. We will say what it costs you: the only way to compare these on price is to open four checkout flows and pick dates in each.

That is a job for a person with a browser, and the figure you get is good for that date only. It is also the reason this page refuses to publish a tidy price column with estimates in it. Seven blanks is the honest answer, and a made-up number would be worse than a blank.

05The season starts on 7 November

Our page on the city tree found that six of eight winter seasons begin on the same Friday, 20 November. Adding the gardens, the arboretum and the parade stretches that backwards.

Only dates that carry the year in the source itself are listed here. That rule exists because Navy Pier's own redirect served us a 2023 press release, and dates without a year are how that kind of thing gets republished.

The season opens 13 days earlier than the big Friday, at Macy's on 7 November, and the Morton Arboretum follows on 14 November. If you are in Chicago in the first half of November and want Christmas, those two are the whole list.

And the two biggest switch-ons are on consecutive nights, in the order nobody expects. The city lights its tree on Friday 20 November at 6 p.m. The Magnificent Mile, which bills itself as the place America's holiday season begins, lights its two hundred trees the following evening. The street that claims the beginning is the second of the two.

06Questions people actually ask

Where is the best place to see Christmas lights in Chicago?

If you want lights without a ticket, the city's own Christmas tree in Millennium Park and the Magnificent Mile's 200-plus lit trees cost nothing and are a fifteen-minute walk apart. If you want a full walk-through display and you are paying, ZooLights, Lincoln Park Zoo is the cheapest of the ticketed ones at $7 to $12 booked ahead, $20 at the gate on the night, and it is the only one of the nine that publishes a complete price list, which tells you something in itself. The big suburban displays, Lightscape at the Botanic Garden and Illumination at the Morton Arboretum, are the most elaborate and also the two that will not quote you a price until you have picked a date.

What time is the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival?

Lights Festival Lane starts at 11 a.m. and the parade itself steps off at 5:30 p.m., on Saturday 21 November 2026. That is the 35th year It runs down North Michigan Avenue and the organiser calls it the largest nighttime parade in the United States. Read from themagnificentmile.com on 8 October 2026, which publishes the times and no price.

What time do the Christmas lights turn on in Chicago?

The city's official tree is lit at 6 p.m. on Friday 20 November 2026 in Millennium Park. The Magnificent Mile's trees are lit the following evening during the parade, 21 November, from 5:30 p.m. So the two biggest switch-ons are on consecutive nights, and the street that bills itself as where the season begins is actually the second of the two.

Where is the Festival of Lights in Chicago?

On North Michigan Avenue. The full name is the Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival and the parade runs down the Mag Mile, with Lights Festival Lane as a daytime street event beforehand. It is not the same thing as the city tree lighting in Millennium Park the night before, which is a separate event run by the city.

How much do Chicago Christmas lights cost?

That is the question this page exists for, because almost nobody answers it. Of the nine displays, 2 publish a price: the city tree, which is free, and ZooLights, Lincoln Park Zoo, at $7 to $12 booked ahead, $20 at the gate on the night. The rest either publish nothing or publish fragments. The Botanic Garden says in writing that prices change with demand and that you must select a date to see one. The Morton Arboretum prices its model railroad, its premium parking and a $60 dining dome, but not admission.

Are any Chicago Christmas light displays free?

Yes, two of the nine, and they are both downtown. The City of Chicago Christmas Tree in Millennium Park is free and stays lit until 10 January. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is a parade on a public street and its organiser quotes no admission price. Beyond those, ZooLights has four free Mondays, though they still need a reservation released a week ahead.

Is the Navy Pier Winter WonderFest still happening?

Navy Pier's current events page still lists Wintrust Winter WonderFest, so yes as far as its own site says. But its /winter-wonderfest/ link redirects to a press release from 2023 announcing a rebrand to Light Up the Lake that it has since reverted, so following that link gives you three-year-old dates. We are not republishing those dates as current, and we have no 2026 price for it because it does not publish one.

When do Chicago's Christmas lights start?

Earlier than most guides say. The season opens on 7 November with the Great Tree at Macy's, 13 days before the Friday that everything else starts. The Morton Arboretum's Illumination follows on 14 November, the city tree and ZooLights on 20 November, and Brookfield and the Mag Mile parade on 21 November.

Wrote and checked this page

I have not stood on Michigan Avenue in November and I am not going to tell you which display is prettiest. What this page does is the thing none of the nine results does: open each organiser's own page and write down what it says about money. The count of blanks is the finding, and I would rather hand you seven blanks than seven estimates. One thing I checked and did not publish: Navy Pier's own link gave me a full set of dates that looked current and turned out to be from 2023, which is exactly how a wrong date gets into twenty guides at once.

Every price, and every absence of one, read from the organisation that runs the display: lpzoo.org on 30 September 2026, chicago.gov and brookfieldzoo.org on 6 October 2026, and chicagobotanic.org, mortonarb.org, navypier.org, griffinmsi.org, themagnificentmile.com and santasrocknlights.com on 8 October 2026. The count of competing pages without prices comes from downloading the 9 readable results that rank for this search and counting dollar figures in each. Dates are listed only where the source states the year. NOT verified and therefore blank: admission prices for Lightscape, Illumination, Winter WonderFest, Christmas Around the World and Santa's Rock n Lights, none of which their organisers publish on the pages read; and any 2026 date for Navy Pier, whose own link serves a 2023 press release.
