Short answer
- The fireworks are at Navy Pier on Thursday 31 December 2026, they start at 11:59 p.m. so midnight falls inside them, and they run 10 minutes.
- They are free. Navy Pier's listing says "Free Event" and the city's page says "Free Admission".
- What the evening costs is transport: $41 in the Pier's garage for two to four hours, or $5 for a CTA day pass that also gets you home.
- That is the same 10 minutes at $4.1 a minute or $0.5 a minute depending on how you arrive.
- Ticketed parties run from about $15 to $600 a head. The sellers publish those figures; the official sources publish none.
01The short version
Be on the lakefront near Navy Pier by about half past eleven, and get there on transit. The display starts at 11:59 p.m. and lasts 10 minutes, which means the whole thing is over by around ten past midnight and the only thing left to do is leave.
Navy Pier's own words, read on 21 October 2026: "As the clock strikes midnight, watch 2027 arrive with a stunning, free fireworks display at Navy Pier." This year's 10-minute, award-winning show will dazzle the lakefront with a music-synchronized performance. Arrive early to grab a prime viewing spot.
You do not need a ticket, a table or a reservation for the fireworks themselves. If you want one of those anyway, the range is at the bottom of this page, and it is wide.
02What the night costs, and it is all transport
Because the show is free, every dollar you spend on it is spent on getting to it. Here is what each way of arriving costs, with each figure taken from the operator that charges it.
Getting to a free show, by how you choose to arrive
| How you get there | Cost | Measured | What that buys |
|---|---|---|---|
| On foot or already downtown | Free | Not applicable | The lakefront and the river both give a view without going onto the Pier. |
| CTA, single 'L' ride each way | $5 | 19 October 2026 | $2.50 each way at the published fare. |
| CTA 1-Day pass | $5 | 19 October 2026 | Unlimited for 24 hours from first use, so it covers getting home too. |
| Navy Pier garage, 1 to 2 hours | $35 | 15 October 2026 | Its own published rate. |
| Navy Pier garage, 2 to 4 hours | $41 | 15 October 2026 | The realistic band for an evening that ends after midnight. |
| Navy Pier garage, 18 to 24 hours | $65 | 15 October 2026 | Also what a lost ticket costs, whatever time you arrived. |
CTA fares from the operator's published fare chart and the garage rates from Navy Pier's own rate card, read on the dates in the third column. The two highlighted rows are the realistic ends of the same evening: a day pass that covers the journey home, and the garage band an evening ending after midnight actually falls into.
$41 against $5 for the same 10 minutes. Put as a rate, that is $4.1 per minute of fireworks if you drive and $0.5 if you do not, and the day pass has the better of it twice over because it also covers the trip back. The full fare chart, including why three different things on the CTA cost five dollars, is in our guide to Chicago transit passes.

One connection worth knowing if you are in Chicago for a few days around New Year: Shoreline's river cruise boards at 124 N Streeter Dr, which is the Navy Pier dock, the same place the fireworks are fired from. It is $39, it runs 60 to 75 minutes with live commentary, and it rates 4.84 from 17,162 reviews, which we rechecked today. What we cannot tell you is whether it sails on Thursday 31 December 2026 itself: the product record carries no December calendar, so check the date before you plan around it. Our comparison of the river cruise operators is in the architecture boat guide.

Check dates and price03Parking, and the one route we will not recommend
If you drive, the obvious choice is the dearest one, which is a pattern we have now measured twice at this address. Navy Pier's garages charge $41 for the two-to-four hour band that an evening ending after midnight falls into, and $65 at the top of the card, which is also the lost-ticket rate whatever time you drove in.
There is a $14 alternative, and we are not recommending it for this night. Millennium Park garage, with a Navy Pier validation comes to $14 for 12 hours, which we measured on 15 October 2026 and which is the cheapest route onto the Pier we found. But the validation is issued at Navy Pier's Guest Services Desk, and Navy Pier does not publish whether that desk is open at midnight on 31 December. Turning up at midnight on the 31st expecting a desk to be staffed is how a $14 evening becomes a $65 one.
The whole rate card, the off-site options and the walk from each of them are in our Navy Pier guide. The short version for tonight: $nothing if you can reach the lakefront without a car, and $5 if you need transit to do it.
04What the city publishes about its own New Year's Eve
Chicago has an official page for its New Year's Eve celebration. Read on 21 October 2026, it contains three pieces of information, and here they are in full.
Everything on the city's New Year's Eve page
| What it says | Detail |
|---|---|
| Title | Chicago's New Year's Eve Celebration |
| Date | Thursday, December 31, 2026 |
| Admission | Free Admission |
Read from chicago.gov on 21 October 2026. The date checks out: 31 December 2026 is a Thursday. What the page does not give is a time, a location or a programme, which is why the start time and the running length on this page come from Navy Pier instead.
That is the whole page: a title, a date and the word free. No time, no location, no programme. The date it gives is right, for what it is worth: 31 December 2026 does fall on a Thursday.
So the useful numbers for this night, the 11:59 p.m. start and the 10-minute length, come from Navy Pier, which is the organisation actually firing them.
05The ticketed parties, and what the range means
Search for Chicago New Year's Eve and most of what comes back is parties with tickets. Those are a real option and some people want exactly that, so here is the range, with the important caveat first.
This is a range, not a price. Ticketed New Year's Eve events in Chicago were advertised at between $15 and $600 a head, read on 21 October 2026. Advertised per head, from general admission at the cheap end to a table with a drinks credit at the expensive one. Unlike every other figure on this page, that span comes from many sellers rather than one operator, so treat it as the shape of the market and check the specific event.
The thing to weigh is what the ticket is actually for. It is not for the fireworks, which are free and visible from the lakefront. It is for a warm room, a drink in your hand and a guaranteed place to stand at midnight in a city where the lakefront in late December is genuinely cold. Whether that is worth $15 or $600 is a judgement about your evening, and we have no measurement that settles it.
What we can say is that the free option is not a consolation prize. It is the same 10 minutes, launched by the same operator, seen from a few hundred metres further back.
06Questions people actually ask
What time do the fireworks start in Chicago on New Year's Eve?
11:59 p.m., so that midnight lands inside the display rather than before it. Navy Pier publishes the time on its own event page alongside the date, Thursday 31 December 2026, and describes the show as 10 minutes long. Read on 21 October 2026.
Are the Chicago New Year's Eve fireworks free?
Yes. Navy Pier's event listing is marked "Free Event" and the wording is unambiguous: "As the clock strikes midnight, watch 2027 arrive with a stunning, free fireworks display at Navy Pier." The city's own New Year's Eve page says "Free Admission" too. Nothing is ticketed and nothing is reserved, which also means nothing is saved for you, so the arriving-early advice is the operator's, not ours.
How long do the New Year's Eve fireworks last in Chicago?
10 minutes. Navy Pier describes it as a "10-minute, award-winning show" synchronised to music. That length is worth knowing before you plan the evening around it: a Chicago lakefront in late December is not a place to arrive two hours early without a reason.
Where can I watch the New Year's Eve fireworks in Chicago?
Navy Pier is where they are launched from, and the display is over the lakefront, so the Pier itself and the lakefront either side of it both work. You do not need to be on the Pier to see a show fired into the sky above it. What you do need is a plan for getting home at half past midnight, which is the part that costs money.
How much does New Year's Eve in Chicago cost?
The fireworks cost nothing. The evening costs whatever you decide to spend around them, and the single biggest lever is transport: Navy Pier's garage charges $41 for two to four hours, and a CTA 1-Day pass costs $5 and covers getting home as well. That is a $36 difference for watching the same 10 minutes. Ticketed parties are a separate decision and run from about $15 to $600 a head.
Where should I park for the Navy Pier fireworks?
Not in the obvious place, if you can avoid it. Navy Pier's own garages are the dearest option we measured anywhere on the Pier: $41 for two to four hours, rising to $65 for a full day, which is also what a lost ticket costs regardless of when you arrived. There is a cheaper route involving a validated ticket at the Millennium Park garage, but we cannot recommend it for this particular night, and the reason is in the parking section above.
Is there a Chicago New Year's countdown?
The fireworks are the countdown, in effect: they begin at 11:59 p.m. so that the new year arrives mid-display. Navy Pier puts it exactly that way, "as the clock strikes midnight". We found no separate official countdown event published by the city for Thursday 31 December 2026, and the city's page for the occasion does not mention one.
Do the CTA trains run late on New Year's Eve in Chicago?
We cannot tell you, and we would rather say so than guess. The CTA's own holiday URL redirects to its decorated-fleet page, which is about the Holiday Train and Bus rather than New Year's Eve, and it publishes no New Year's Eve service page at all as of 21 October 2026. What we can tell you is that a 1-Day pass runs 24 hours from first use, so one $5 pass bought on the evening of the 31st still covers the journey home after midnight.
Diego FresnoEverything that matters on this page is a published figure rather than an opinion, and the two that do the work came from different places: Navy Pier publishes the start time and the ten-minute length on its own event listing, and the cost of the evening comes from a fare chart and a garage rate card we had already read for other pages this month. The comparison between them is arithmetic, not advice. The one judgement I will offer is about the parking: having read Navy Pier's rate card line by line in October, driving to a free ten-minute show and paying $41 for the privilege is the part of this evening I would change.
Start time, date, duration, the "Free Event" marking and both quoted sentences read from navypier.org on 21 October 2026. The city's New Year's Eve page read from chicago.gov the same day, and the three lines in the table are its entire content. CTA fares and the 1-Day pass price read from the operator's fare chart on 19 October 2026; Navy Pier garage rates and the Millennium Park validated rate from the Pier's own rate card on 15 October 2026. The cruise price, rating and review count read from the Viator product record on 21 October 2026, with the boarding address taken from the record's own logistics rather than the title. NOT verified and therefore stated as unknown: whether Navy Pier's Guest Services Desk, which issues the validated parking ticket, operates at midnight on 31 December, which Navy Pier does not publish; whether the CTA runs extended service that night, as it publishes no New Year's Eve service page at all; and whether the river cruise sails on 31 December, which its product record does not say. The party price range is the span of what sellers advertised on 21 October 2026 and is not a figure from a single operator.
