Short answer
- All five of the famous free days are for Illinois residents. Every one asks for a state ID, a CityKey or a ZIP code.
- The Shedd states it outright: free hours do not apply to guests from other states, even when they come with an Illinois resident.
- The Art Institute has no free day at all. It has two prices, $32 and $20, and the $12 gap applies every day of the year.
- The Chicago Cultural Center is free to everyone, open daily, and 304 metres from Millennium Park. That is closer than the Art Institute, which is 462 metres away.

01The short version
If you live in Illinois, the free days are genuinely good and you should use them: take your driver's licence, book ahead, and read the dates off the museum's own page rather than off a listicle.
If you are visiting from another state, none of them are for you. Not one. That sounds blunt because the museums are blunt about it, and because a lot of pages on this search imply otherwise by leaving the word "resident" out of the headline. What you can do instead is walk 304 metres from the Bean into a building that is free to everybody, which is the last section of this page.

We read the five pages the museums publish themselves. Here is what each one calls its offer, when it runs, and exactly what it asks you to show at the door.

Read from each museum's own website on 24 September 2026. The highlighted row is the Art Institute, which is in this table because people look for its free day, and it does not have one: it has a resident price and a visitor price. Every other row requires proof that you live in Illinois.
The Shedd Aquarium is the only one that answers the question directly, in its own FAQ, and it is worth reading twice: "Our Illinois Resident Free Hours are only available to residents of the state of Illinois and do not apply to any guests from other states, even when they are visiting with an Illinois resident." That last clause is the one that catches people out. Coming with a local does not work.
The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry makes the same point architecturally rather than in prose. The page it ranks with on this search is called zipcode-validation, and it asks you to type a ZIP code to find out whether you qualify. When a museum builds a form to check whether you are allowed the offer, the offer is not for visitors.
03What free does not cover
Even for residents, "free" has edges, and they are not the same edges at each museum.

Read from each museum's own website on 24 September 2026. "Nothing stated" means that museum does not publish an exclusion, not that there is none. The highlighted row is the one worth knowing: a free Shedd ticket booked online carries a $5 fee per order, and the same ticket booked by telephone does not.
Two details are worth pulling out. A free ticket at the Shedd costs $5 if you book it on the internet, because of a convenience fee per order, and nothing if you ring them. And the Griffin excludes its Giant Dome Theater films from free days, which is the thing a lot of people go there for.
The Shedd is also the most flexible about proof, which is a point in its favour: a college ID works for students living in Illinois, and if your ID does not carry a current address it accepts a utility bill, a bank statement, a lease or a pay stub alongside it. Under-18s with a resident adult show nothing at all.
04The lists online are behind the museums
This one costs people visits, so it is worth being specific. On 24 September 2026, the guide Google ranks second for this search listed Shedd free dates ending in August and Adler dates ending in September. On the same day, the Shedd's own page listed free nights every Monday through to 15 December, and the Adler listed dates in October and November.
A page on the first results page of this search is a list headed August 2026. Another sits on a suburban library's website. None of that is dishonest, it is just what happens to a calendar someone wrote in the spring: it decays, and Google keeps ranking it.
The rule that follows is short. Read the dates off the museum, not off a guide, including this one. The dates on this page were read on 24 September 2026 and every row links to the page they came from. When they go stale, that page will be right and this one will be wrong.
05What is genuinely free to everyone
Here is the part that does apply to you, and the measurement that makes it worth printing: the closest of these to Millennium Park is also the one that costs nothing, and it is closer than the Art Institute. The Chicago Cultural Center is 304 metres away, which is 3.6 minutes on foot. The Art Institute is 462 metres away and $32.

The catch at the zoo is not the entry, it is the car. Lincoln Park Zoo is free for all, 365 days a year, and its own page puts its car park at $35 to $45 a day, which is more than the Art Institute charges to walk in. Take the bus. The National Museum of Mexican Art is the furthest of the three at 6.3 km and the only one that shuts on Mondays.

06Questions people actually ask
Can non-residents use Chicago's free museum days?
No, and the Shedd Aquarium is the only one that says so in plain words, so it is worth quoting: its FAQ states that free hours "are only available to residents of the state of Illinois and do not apply to any guests from other states, even when they are visiting with an Illinois resident". The Field Museum asks for an Illinois driver's licence, state ID or Chicago CityKey. The Adler asks for proof of residency at checkout. The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry runs a page where you type your ZIP code to find out whether you qualify. If you live in another state, all five of the famous free days are closed to you.
What museums in Chicago are free for everyone?
Three that we checked on the museums' own pages. The Chicago Cultural Center is free and open daily 10 to 5, and it is 304 metres from Millennium Park, which makes it closer than the Art Institute. Lincoln Park Zoo describes itself as free for all with no tickets or reservations needed, 365 days a year. The National Museum of Mexican Art in Pilsen is free and open Tuesday to Sunday. The next ones it lists are 1, 26, 27 and 28 October and 9, 10, 16, 17 and 18 November 2026. Note those autumn dates, because the guide ranking second in Google for free museum days stops listing Adler dates in September.
Do the free museum day lists online stay up to date?
Not all of them, and the gap runs in the direction that costs you a visit. When we checked on 24 September 2026, the aggregator ranking second listed Shedd free dates only to August and Adler only to September, while both museums were publishing dates through October, November and December on their own pages. One of the pages Google ranks on the first page is a list headed August 2026. Read the museum's own page: it is the one that has to be right.
Is the Museum of Science and Industry free for tourists?
No. Its free days are for Illinois residents, it excludes Giant Dome Theater films and certain special experiences even then, and its eligibility page asks for a ZIP code. It is also the furthest of all of these from downtown: 12.1 km from Millennium Park, in Hyde Park, so it is a trip rather than an afternoon.
Diego FresnoI went to Chicago in July 2025 and paid full price at the Art Institute, which is the honest reason this page exists: I went looking for a free day, found a lot of pages that mentioned one, and worked out at the ticket desk that the word missing from all of them was 'resident'. So this page reads the five museum pages and prints the sentence each one actually uses. The measurement that surprised me was the last one: the building that is free to everybody is nearer the Bean than the one I paid to get into.
