Shedd Aquarium Tickets: $19.95 Is Not the Price You Pay

The Shedd's ticket page prints exactly one adult price, $19.95, and it is for Chicago residents. Everyone else is told that prices vary. We opened the booking and measured one.

$19.95resident, printed
$41.45visitor, measured not printed
2.08xwhat the visitor pays
6 of 8routes with a published figure

Short answer

  • The page titled "Ticket Prices" carries one adult figure: $19.95, Chicago residents only.
  • Everyone else gets "prices vary". The Shedd prices by date and compares itself, in writing, to booking a flight.
  • We opened the booking on 29 September and got $41.45 for the next day. That is 2.08 times the resident price, $21.5 more.
  • The Illinois resident free nights carry a $5 online fee. They are free only if you telephone.
  • Go City includes the Shedd on its All-Inclusive pass and not on the other two, which it footnotes.

01The short version

If you live in Chicago, it is $19.95 and the aquarium says so plainly. If you do not, nobody will quote you a number until you pick a date. The one we measured was $41.45, on 29 September for the following day.

That is the whole problem with this search, and it is why a page this long exists for a question that should take one line.

02One price, and it is not yours

The Shedd has a page titled Ticket Prices. Under a heading that also says TICKET PRICES, there are three lines. Here they are, complete:

Read from https://www.sheddaquarium.org/plan-a-visit/get-tickets on 13 October 2026. The highlighted row is the one that covers everyone reading this site.

One adult figure on a page called Ticket Prices, and it is restricted to people who live in the city. A visitor who reads that page carefully comes away with $19.95 in their head and no way to spend it.

To the aquarium's credit, it explains the mechanism rather than hiding it. Its own words:

With plan-ahead pricing, non-Chicago residents can save money on general admission by planning their visit in advance and selecting non-peak dates and times. Similar to booking a flight or purchasing concert tickets.

We have seen this exact mechanism once before. Lightscape at the Chicago Botanic Garden also tells you in writing that it uses plan-ahead pricing and that you must select a date to see a figure. Two of Chicago's biggest paid attractions now price like airlines, and the second one came out of a different search entirely.

So we opened the booking. On 29 September 2026, for a visit the following day, general adult admission came to $41.45. That is $21.5 more than the resident price, or 2.08 times it. We are giving you that figure with its date welded on, because it is good for that date and no other.

What we could not do, and why there is no price table below. Reading a ladder of prices across a month means stepping through the booking flow date by date, and that flow asks you to log in or continue as a guest. It returned HTTP 522, a connection timeout, 2 times while this was being written, once on the Ticket Prices page and once on the purchase flow. An estimated table would be exactly the thing this page is complaining about.

Go straight to the page, because you will not land on it. The ticket page lives at sheddaquarium.org/plan-a-visit/get-tickets, and searching for Shedd tickets tends to put you on the home page or the gift shop instead. Starting from the aquarium's own navigation, it is under Plan a Visit.

03Eight ways in, and what each costs

There are more routes into this building than into any other paid attraction we have looked at in Chicago. Six of the eight come with a figure attached. Two do not.

Chart of eight ways into Shedd Aquarium, read from sheddaquarium.org on 13 October 2026. Six publish a figure: Chicago residents at $19.95 any day, Illinois resident free nights at $5 online or free by phone, Chicago police and firefighters free with ID, members free every day, and the Chicago CityPASS and Go City All-Inclusive passes as bundles. Two do not publish a figure: general admission for visitors, which the aquarium says simply varies and which we measured once at $41.45, and the Museums for All EBT discount, which is described but never priced. The visitor pays 2.08 times the resident price, and the visitor price is the one the aquarium does not print.
Gold means the aquarium prints a figure. Grey means it does not. Read on 13 October 2026.

Read from sheddaquarium.org on 13 October 2026, except the visitor figure, measured by opening the booking on 29 September 2026. The two highlighted rows are the same aquarium on the same day: the difference between them is where you live.

The two highlighted rows are the page in miniature. Same building, same day, same tank. One number is printed and fixed, the other is unprinted and moves.

On buying anywhere other than the aquarium, the Shedd is unusually direct. It carries a notice saying it will not accept tickets from unauthorised sellers, and names the only four it will honour: itself, Chicago CityPASS, Go City Chicago and selected hotel partners. If you are buying from anywhere else, that is the sentence to read twice.

Chicago CityPASS, with the Shedd as a fixed attraction

4.43 · 540 reviews

The Shedd is one of two attractions included on every Chicago CityPASS rather than one of the ones you pick, and the aquarium lists CityPASS as an authorised seller in its own anti-scam notice, which is the strongest thing we can say for it here. Whether the pass is worth buying is a separate question: we priced all eight of its attractions against their own websites rather than against the pass's claimed savings, and that comparison lives on our CityPASS page. 4.43 from 540 reviews. Note it is not free to cancel, unlike most things we list.

Check dates and price

If you want the arithmetic rather than the pitch, our page on whether the CityPASS is worth it prices every attraction separately. The Shedd is the most expensive single item on that list, which is part of why the pass looks good.

04The free night costs five dollars

The Shedd runs Illinois Resident Free Nights on Mondays from 5 to 9 p.m., between 1 September and 15 December 2026. Every adult over 18 needs photo ID with an Illinois address.

Reserving one online costs $5 on top. It is a convenience fee per order rather than per ticket, so a family of four pays it once. And it is avoidable: the aquarium says booking by phone on 312-939-2438, between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central, carries no fee at all.

A free admission that costs $5 unless you telephone is still a good deal, and it is also not what the word free means. We are pointing at it because a visitor budgeting for a free night should know there is a number in it.

And it is not for you if you are visiting. The Shedd states in its own FAQ that free hours do not apply to guests from other states, even when they arrive with an Illinois resident. That is clearer than most Chicago museums manage, and we compared all of them on exactly that point.

05Questions people actually ask

How much are Shedd Aquarium tickets?

If you live in Chicago, $19.95 for an adult, any day, and the aquarium prints that on its ticket page. If you do not, the aquarium does not tell you: its page says only that prices vary. We opened the booking on 29 September 2026 and got $41.45 for the following day, which is 2.08 times the resident price. That figure is good for that date and no other, because the Shedd prices by date in the way an airline does, and says so.

Why does the Shedd not publish a price?

It explains the mechanism openly, which is more than most do. Its page says: "With plan-ahead pricing, non-Chicago residents can save money on general admission by planning their visit in advance and selecting non-peak dates and times. Similar to booking a flight or purchasing concert tickets." So the price moves with demand and the only way to see yours is to pick a date in the booking flow. What it does not say, and what this page is for, is that the published $19.95 applies to residents only, so a visitor reading the ticket page comes away with a number that is not available to them.

Is Shedd Aquarium free on any day?

There are free nights, but only for Illinois residents and only with a photo ID showing an Illinois address for every adult over 18. They run Mondays from 5 to 9 p.m. between 1 September and 15 December 2026. And they are not quite free: m., 1 September to 15 December 2026. The $5 is a convenience fee per order, not per ticket, and booking on 312-939-2438 avoids it. If you are visiting from another state, these do not apply to you, and the Shedd is unusually clear about saying so.

Does Go City include Shedd Aquarium?

Only one of its passes does, and the Shedd footnotes this rather than headlining it. ONLY the All-Inclusive Pass. The Explorer Pass and Build Your Own Pass do not include the Shedd, which it footnotes rather than headlines. If you buy the wrong Go City pass expecting the aquarium, that is a mistake the pass page will not stop you making.

Is Chicago CityPASS good for Shedd Aquarium?

The Shedd names CityPASS as one of only four authorised sellers of its tickets, alongside itself, Go City and select hotel partners, in a notice warning about ticket scams. The Shedd is also one of the two fixed attractions on every Chicago CityPASS. Whether the pass as a whole is worth it is a separate question with its own answer, and we checked all eight attractions against their own websites rather than taking the pass's word for the savings.

Do I need to book Shedd Aquarium tickets in advance?

The aquarium says advance reservations are highly recommended because of high demand, and separately that booking ahead is how non-residents get a lower price. Those are two different reasons pushing the same way. For the free nights it is stronger than a recommendation in practice: walk-up reservations exist but the Shedd says they typically sell out quickly.

What are Shedd Aquarium's opening hours?

They change by day of week, and the aquarium points you at its calendar page rather than printing a weekly table. On 13 October 2026 its own header said open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a late close, but that is one day rather than a rule, so check the calendar for yours.

Is Shedd Aquarium worth it?

We have not been, so we are not going to tell you whether the animals justify the money. What we can tell you is what the money is and how much it moves: $19.95 if you live here, around $41.45 if you do not, and a price you cannot see until you commit to a date. Also worth knowing before you plan a visit: the aquarium's own purchase page currently opens with "Our building is under construction".

Wrote and checked this page

I have not been to the Shedd, so nothing here tells you whether it is a good aquarium. What this page does is read the aquarium's own pages and write down what they say about money, which turned out to be less than I expected. The $41.45 is one measurement on one date, taken by opening the booking, and I have left the date attached rather than rounding it into a range. I tried to get a month of dates and could not: the purchase flow timed out twice. Two things I checked and did not publish: I first wrote that the discounts page carries no free-hours dates at all, which was wrong, they are one level further down; and I nearly reported the aquarium's site as broken on the strength of those two timeouts, which is more than two observations can carry.

The three lines of the ticket page, the plan-ahead pricing explanation, the free nights and their $5 online fee, the Go City pass restriction, the authorised-seller notice, the telephone number and hours, and the construction notice all read from sheddaquarium.org on 13 October 2026. The $41.45 general admission figure was measured by opening the booking flow on 29 September 2026 for a visit on 30 September, and is valid for that date only. Free night dates from the aquarium's Illinois Resident Free Hours page. Walking distance from Millennium Park, 2563 m and about 31 minutes, routed with OpenRouteService. NOT verified and therefore absent: any price ladder by date, because the purchase flow returned HTTP 522 twice; the Museums for All discount, which the aquarium describes without pricing; and current opening hours, which change by day and which the aquarium itself declines to tabulate.
