Short answer
- $45 for 90 minutes, which is $0.50 a minute, the cheapest of the four.
- Same length as the Chicago Architecture Center cruise for $12 less. What you give up is the trained docent.
- Its non-refundable rule applies after the scheduled departure time, which is narrower than the Center's blanket no.
- The only one of the four where anyone travels free: under-4s.
- It publishes no season, and its dock is directly across the street from a different company's.
01The short version
If you want the most river for the money, this is the one. Ninety minutes is the longest on offer, $45 is the second-cheapest ticket, and those two facts together are the whole argument.
Book the Chicago Architecture Center instead if the narration is the point. It is the same ninety minutes and twelve dollars more, and the twelve dollars buy guides trained by the institution that studies the buildings. That is a real difference and it is the only real difference between those two tickets.
02The cheapest water in Chicago
The four tours run from sixty minutes to ninety. Ranking them by the number on the ticket compares things of different sizes, and every list we found does exactly that.
Advertised price against what it buys
| Operator | Advertised | Minutes | Per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wendella Boats | $45 | 90 | $0.50 |
| City Cruises | From $42, fees and taxes included | 75 | $0.56 |
| Chicago Architecture Center | $57 | 90 | $0.63 |
| Shoreline Sightseeing | $39 for 60 minutes, $46 for 75 | 60 | $0.65 |
Advertised adult prices read from each company's own booking page on 1 October 2026. Per-minute figures are ours, from the cheapest advertised adult ticket divided by the duration it buys. Wendella's is a flat price; Shoreline and Seadog advertise a floor. Only Seadog states fees and taxes are included.
Wendella is $0.50 a minute and Shoreline, the one that advertises itself as the cheap option, is $0.65. Thirty per cent more for the water, six dollars less on the ticket. And Shoreline's 75-minute Signature tour at $46 costs a dollar more than Wendella's 90-minute one, which is the single cleanest comparison on this page: a dollar more for fifteen minutes less.
One qualifier we are obliged to put here, because it is the measurement we have not made. These are advertised prices, not checkout totals. Seadog is the only one of the four stating that fees and taxes are included, and the Chicago Architecture Center sells through Ticketmaster, which adds them. So the real gaps may be wider than this table, and in the Center's case certainly are. Until we have taken all four to the last step of a real checkout, we are not publishing a total.
03Book it, or one of the other three
Wendella sells direct from its own site, where it states 9,097+ reviews, its own figure.
Wendella's two river tours

The best value of the four
Wendella 90-minute architecture tour
4.71 · 10,999 reviews
The ninety-minute one, and the reason this page exists: $45 for the longest tour on the river works out cheaper per minute than anything else in Chicago. 4.71 from 10,999 reviews here, and Wendella separately claims 9 on its own site. Booking through the platform adds free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, which is wider than the operator's own published rule.

Shorter, and we cannot name the operator
Chicago River Experience, 45 minutes
4.65 · 3,610 reviews
The cheapest way onto the river in this catalogue at $28, and half the length of the tour above. One caveat we always state: we read the operator field from the product record for the other cruises and it is blank on this one, so we are not naming who runs it. 4.65 from 3,610 reviews. At 45 minutes it is a river ride rather than an architecture tour, and the commentary is not described.
For the narration, the Chicago Architecture Center. For the cheapest ticket, Shoreline. For the lake and the locks, Seadog. All four side by side is in which architecture cruise to book.
04Its refund rule is narrower than it reads
Wendella's wording is "Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable after the scheduled departure time.", and the five words that matter are at the end.
That restriction is pinned to the scheduled departure time, not to the moment you pay. It is not the same sentence as the Chicago Architecture Center's, which says refunds and exchanges are not permitted full stop, with no time attached. People read both as "no refunds" and they are not the same rule.
What the four say about getting your money back
| Operator | What it publishes |
|---|---|
| Wendella Boats | Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable after the scheduled departure time. |
| City Cruises | Free Cancellation with Ticket Assurance Up to 2 hours in advance. |
| Chicago Architecture Center | Refunds and exchanges for ticket purchases are not permitted. |
| Shoreline Sightseeing | Nothing on its tour page |
Read from each operator's own pages on 1 October 2026, including the Chicago Architecture Center's River Cruise FAQ. The two highlighted rows are the ones that leave you a way out. All four depart rain or shine.
We are not going to tell you what Wendella does in practice if you ring up the day before, because we have not tried it and that would be inventing a policy. What we can say is that its published sentence does not close the door the way the Center's does, and that is worth knowing when you are choosing between two ninety-minute cruises twelve dollars apart.
05The dock across the street
Wendella boards at 400 N. Michigan Avenue. Shoreline boards at 401 N. Michigan Avenue. Different companies, opposite pavements, one digit apart. The Chicago Architecture Center is a third set of steps across the bridge at 112 E. Wacker.
Wendella's side is the northwest corner of the dusable (michigan avenue) bridge, by the wrigley building, which is the easier landmark to aim for: if the Wrigley Building is behind you, you are in the right place. Seadog is the outlier, boarding at Navy Pier, a kilometre and a half east of all three.
06Questions people actually ask
How much is the Wendella architecture tour?
$45 for an adult and $20 for ages 4 to 12, under 4 free, read from wendellaboats.com on 1 October 2026. It is a flat price rather than a from-price, which among these four is unusual: two of the other three advertise a floor you may not end up paying.
Is Wendella the best value Chicago architecture cruise?
By the only measure that compares tours of different lengths, yes. Ninety minutes at $45 is $0.50 a minute. Shoreline's 60-minute tour at $39 is $0.65, Seadog is $0.56 and the Chicago Architecture Center is $0.63. Wendella is the cheapest water of the four and the second-cheapest ticket, which is why the lists that rank by advertised price never put it first.
How long is the Wendella river tour?
Ninety minutes, the same as the Chicago Architecture Center cruise and fifteen to thirty minutes longer than Shoreline or Seadog. Against the Center it is the identical duration for twelve dollars less; what you give up is the trained docent.
Can you cancel a Wendella booking?
Read the wording carefully, because it is narrower than people assume: "Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable after the scheduled departure time." That restriction attaches to the departure time, not to the purchase. The Chicago Architecture Center's is the blanket version, stating that refunds and exchanges are not permitted at all, and Seadog cancels free up to two hours before. Shoreline publishes nothing.
Where does Wendella leave from?
400 N. Michigan Avenue, on the northwest corner of the dusable (michigan avenue) bridge, by the wrigley building. This is the dock people get wrong, because Shoreline is at 401 N. Michigan, directly across the street, and it is a different company. If you have a Wendella ticket, you want the side by the Wrigley Building.
Does the Wendella tour go to Chinatown?
Its own page says the tour covers all three branches of the Chicago River, including stretches to Goose Island and Chinatown that other tours do not reach. We have not ridden the route with a map to check how far south it actually turns, so we are quoting the claim rather than confirming it. None of the four operators publishes a route map.
Do small children pay on Wendella?
Children aged 4 to 12 are $20 and under-4s travel free. That makes Wendella the only one of the four where anybody travels free: the Chicago Architecture Center states that every passenger needs a ticket regardless of age, Shoreline's free band stops at 2, and Seadog only says under-12s must be with an adult.
Diego FresnoI took one architecture cruise in Chicago, on 15 July 2025, and I cannot identify the company from my own footage, so this page does not claim it was Wendella. What it does is divide four prices by four durations, which took about a minute and reverses the ranking every list publishes. The route claim about Chinatown is quoted rather than confirmed: no operator publishes a route map, so I cannot check how far south any of them turns.
Price, child pricing, duration, dock, narration wording, review claim and the refund sentence read from wendellaboats.com on 1 October 2026. Comparisons with the other three from architecture.org and its River Cruise FAQ, shorelinesightseeing.com and cityexperiences.com, read the same morning. Per-minute figures are ours, from the cheapest advertised adult ticket divided by the duration it buys. NOT verified and therefore absent: Wendella's season, which it does not publish; the route, which no operator maps; what Wendella does about refunds before departure, which its wording leaves open and we have not tested; and the checkout total with fees for any of the four.
