Short answer
- $39 for 60 minutes, $46 for 75. The $39 buys the 60-minute tour, not the 75-minute one.
- At $0.65 a minute it is the most expensive of the four. Wendella is $0.50.
- It is the only one of the four that publishes neither a season nor a cancellation policy on its tour page.
- It is the only one with two docks, and the Michigan Avenue one is directly across the street from a different company.
- It is the only one of the four included in the Chicago CityPASS, and it publishes 4.8 out of 5 on Google across more than 4,100 reviews, its own figure.
01The short version
Book Shoreline if the point is to get on the river for as little money as possible, and book the 60-minute one. It is the cheapest ticket of the four and it does the job: live guides, over 40 buildings, and a dock a few minutes from the Bean.
Do not book it because it is better value. It is not, and the arithmetic is in the next section. And if your trip depends on knowing when the season ends or whether you can get your money back, this is the operator that does not tell you either.
02The cheapest ticket, the dearest minute
Every list of Chicago architecture cruises orders them by price, and on that ordering Shoreline wins. The problem with that ordering is that the four tours are not the same length: they run from sixty minutes to ninety. Dividing one by the other takes a second and reverses the result.
What a minute on the river costs with each company
| Operator | Advertised | Minutes | Per minute |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wendella Boats | $45 | 90 | $0.50 |
| City Cruises | From $42, fees and taxes included | 75 | $0.56 |
| Chicago Architecture Center | $57 | 90 | $0.63 |
| Shoreline Sightseeing | $39 for 60 minutes, $46 for 75 | 60 | $0.65 |
Advertised adult prices read from each company's own booking page on 1 October 2026. Per-minute figures are ours, calculated from the cheapest advertised adult ticket divided by the duration that ticket buys. The highlighted row is Shoreline. Seadog is the only one of the four that states fees and taxes are included in its price, so its real figure is the only one that cannot go up at checkout.
Shoreline is $0.65 a minute and Wendella is $0.50. The cheapest ticket in Chicago is the most expensive water in Chicago, by thirty per cent. Buying Shoreline's seventy-five-minute Signature tour instead does not fix it: $46 for 75 minutes is $0.61 a minute, still worse than Wendella, and a dollar more than Wendella charges for fifteen minutes longer.
This is not an argument that Shoreline is bad value. Sixty minutes may be exactly what you want, and six dollars is six dollars. It is an argument that "cheapest" and "best value" are different claims, and every list we read treats them as the same one.
03Book it, or one of the other three
Shoreline sells direct from its own site, and it is also the only one of the four inside the Chicago CityPASS, which is worth knowing if you were buying the pass anyway and worth ignoring if you were not.

The most reviewed thing in Chicago
Shoreline Sightseeing architecture river tour
4.84 · 17,028 reviews
The strongest evidence of any product in our Chicago catalogue by a distance: 17,028 reviews at 4.84. On its own site Shoreline separately claims 4.8 across more than 4,100 Google reviews. Booking here rather than direct adds free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which is notable because Shoreline's own page publishes no refund policy at all, so the reseller is the one telling you where you stand.
$39 from
Free cancellation 24h before, which its own site does not offer in writing.
Check dates and priceIf what you actually want is the most time on the water, Wendella gives ninety minutes for $45. If you want the buildings explained by people trained to explain them, the Chicago Architecture Center cruise is the only one with certified docents. If you want to go out through the locks onto the lake, Seadog is the only one that does. All four compared side by side is in which architecture cruise to book.
04Two things it does not publish
We read all four operators' pages on the same morning looking for the same facts. Shoreline is missing two that the others give, and it is the one with the most people searching for it.
What each of the four tells you about the terms
| Operator | Season | If you cancel | Review count published |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shoreline Sightseeing | Not published | Not published on its tour page | 4.8 out of 5 on Google across more than 4,100 reviews, its own figure |
| Wendella Boats | Not published on its tour page | Non-refundable only after departure time | 9,097+ reviews, its own figure |
| Chicago Architecture Center | March to November | No refunds and no exchanges | None on this page |
| City Cruises | Daily | Free cancellation up to 2 hours before | None on this page |
Read from each operator's own tour page, and for the Chicago Architecture Center also from its River Cruise FAQ, on 1 October 2026. 2 of the four publish a season and 3 publish a refund policy. The highlighted row is the only one missing both.
The season matters because this is a seasonal product. The Chicago Architecture Center says plainly that its cruise runs march to november, which means it is shut for about a third of the year. Seadog says it runs daily. Shoreline and Wendella say nothing, so if you are planning a trip in March or November you cannot tell from their pages whether they will be operating.
The refund line matters because the river has weather. All four depart rain or shine. What differs is what happens if you cannot go, and here the spread across the four is the widest of anything we measured: the Chicago Architecture Center states "Refunds and exchanges for ticket purchases are not permitted.", Seadog offers "Free Cancellation with Ticket Assurance Up to 2 hours in advance.", Wendella says tickets are non-refundable after the scheduled departure time, which is a narrower statement than it first reads, and Shoreline does not say.
We have not phoned them to ask. This page reports what the companies publish, and a blank is a finding rather than a gap to fill in. If Shoreline publishes a policy later, this section stops being true and we will change it.
05The dock across the street
Shoreline is the only one of the four with two departure points: 401 N. Michigan Avenue and 124 N. Streeter Drive. That is genuinely useful if you are staying near Navy Pier, because it is the only architecture cruise besides Seadog that you can board without walking to the bridge.
And here is the thing that goes wrong on the day. Shoreline's Michigan Avenue dock is at 401 N. Michigan Avenue. Wendella's is at 400 N. Michigan Avenue. Different companies, opposite sides of the street, consecutive numbers. The Chicago Architecture Center is a third set of steps on the other side of the bridge at 112 E. Wacker. Three operators within a block, and two of them one digit apart.
If you have booked Shoreline and you are standing on the northwest corner by the Wrigley Building, you are at Wendella's dock. Cross over.
06Questions people actually ask
How much is the Shoreline architecture tour?
$39 for 60 minutes, $46 for 75, and children from $20 for ages 3 to 12, under 2 free. Those are the prices on its own site on 1 October 2026. The $39 figure is the one that appears in search results and it buys the 60-minute Classic tour, not the 75-minute Signature one.
Is Shoreline the cheapest Chicago architecture cruise?
By advertised price, yes: $39 is the lowest of the four. By what you get for it, no. Sixty minutes at $39 works out at $0.65 a minute, which is the most expensive of the four. Wendella's 90 minutes at $45 is $0.50 a minute. You are paying less in total and more per minute on the water.
How long is the Shoreline architecture tour?
Sixty or seventy-five minutes, and which one you get depends on which ticket you buy. The 60-minute Classic is $39 and the 75-minute Signature is $46. The $46 version is a dollar more than Wendella's 90-minute tour, which is the comparison worth making before you book.
Where does the Shoreline cruise leave from?
Two places, which is unique among the four: 401 N. Michigan Avenue and 124 N. Streeter Drive. The Michigan Avenue dock is the one that catches people out, because Wendella is at 400 N. Michigan and Shoreline is at 401. Those are different companies on opposite sides of the street, with consecutive numbers.
Can you cancel a Shoreline booking?
Its tour page does not say, and we are not going to guess. Of the four operators, three publish something about refunds and Shoreline is the one that does not. For comparison, the Chicago Architecture Center states flatly that refunds and exchanges are not permitted, and Seadog offers free cancellation up to two hours before. If the answer matters to your trip, ask before you pay.
When does the Shoreline season end?
Also not published on its tour page. The Chicago Architecture Center states its cruise runs March to November and Seadog says daily; Shoreline and Wendella give no dates. This matters more than it sounds, because the river cruise is a seasonal product and a page that does not say when it stops is a page you cannot plan an October or March trip around.
Is Shoreline included in the Chicago CityPASS?
Yes, and it is the only one of the four that is. Whether the pass is worth buying is a separate question with an awkward answer: all eight gate prices CityPASS quotes to justify its saving are higher than the venues charge. We did that arithmetic separately.
How many buildings does the Shoreline tour cover?
Its page says over 40 iconic sites. The Chicago Architecture Center and Wendella both say over 50, and Seadog does not give a number. Take all of these as marketing counts rather than measurements: no operator publishes a list, so none of the four figures can be checked.
Diego FresnoI took one architecture cruise in Chicago, on 15 July 2025 at 11:06, and I cannot tell you which company it was. The bow footage has no logo, no lettering on the life rings and no flag, so naming one would be inventing it. That is why this page does not describe what the trip was like and sticks to what the four companies publish about themselves, which turned out to be the more interesting half anyway.
Prices, durations, docks, dock references, child pricing, building counts, narration, the published review figure and the absence of a season and a refund policy all read from shorelinesightseeing.com on 1 October 2026. That page records a modification date of 28 September 2026. The comparisons with the other three come from their own pages read the same morning: architecture.org and its River Cruise FAQ, wendellaboats.com and cityexperiences.com. The per-minute figures are ours, calculated from each company's cheapest advertised adult ticket and the duration that ticket buys. NOT verified and therefore absent: the final price with fees at the end of a real checkout, which we have not completed in any of the four; Shoreline's refund terms, which it does not publish; and its season, likewise.
