Lincoln Park Zoo ZooLights 2026: Prices, the Free Nights and the Six It Is Shut

01The short version

Book a Fixed Date ticket in advance rather than paying at the gate. That is the difference between $7 and $20 for the same evening. The zoo prices each date separately somewhere in the $7 to $12 band but does not say which date is which until the booking calendar opens on 6 October 2026, so we cannot tell you the cheap nights and neither can anyone else writing this before then. What we can tell you is that the one thing you cannot do afterwards is change the date on a ticket you already hold.

Everything else on this page is there because the zoo publishes it and almost nobody repeats it: the 4 free nights stop before the holiday week, three Tuesdays in December are closed, and the “flexible” ticket costs exactly the same as the penalty you pay for not planning.

02The zoo is free. This is not.

We wrote about Lincoln Park Zoo already, in what is actually free in Chicago, and the reason it made that page is the zoo’s own wording. It describes itself as “free for all, no tickets or reservations needed”, open every day of the year. It is one of the very few zoos in the United States you can still walk into without paying anything.

ZooLights is the same animals, the same paths and the same institution, and every individual needs a ticket, infants included. Members do not walk in either: they claim theirs. It is not a contradiction, because a ticketed evening event and a free zoo can coexist, but it is worth saying plainly, because “Chicago’s free zoo does a Christmas lights thing” sets an expectation that costs $20 at the gate.

The same is true of getting there. The zoo’s visitor page puts its car park at $35 to $45 a day, more than the Art Institute charges for admission, and for ZooLights it adds that parking is limited, is not included in the ticket and closes when the lot is full. Its own advice is to take transit or a rideshare. It is 4,907 metres from Millennium Park, so the bus is genuinely the sane option.

03What a ticket costs, and when

The gap between $7 and $20 is the whole financial story of this event. It is the same ticket to the same evening. Booked in advance for a named date it starts at $7. Bought at the gate on the night it is $20, which is 186% more. For a family of four that is $28 against $80.

The detail worth noticing is the third row. The Flexible Admission ticket, the one that exists for people who do not want to commit to a date, is priced at $20. That is not a small premium over the advance price: it is exactly the same as the day-of penalty. So the zoo prices flexibility and lack of planning identically, and the only way to pay less than $20 is to name your night in advance and accept that you cannot change it.

Tickets go on sale to the public on 6 October 2026. Members had access from 29 September 2026. We have not seen the 2026 dates sell out and are not going to claim they will, but the $7 nights are specific dates, and when a specific date is gone the alternative on this price list is $20.

04The two things you can book instead

ZooLights is not sold through any booking platform: you buy it from the zoo. What the platforms do sell for the same December evening is these two, and they are worth putting next to it because each one fails where ZooLights does not, and vice versa.

The highlighted row is the real trade. ZooLights runs in rain and in snow and keeps your money either way. The Tree Crawl does the opposite: its operator states it does not operate in bad weather and will contact you that morning to cancel and refund. One of those is a cheap ticket you might not enjoy. The other is a dearer ticket you might not get to use, but not lose.

A guided walk between the Christmas trees and displays of the Loop and the Magnificent Mile, taking in the Christkindlmarket and the old Marshall Field's, with a guide and a couple of holiday sweets included. It is the guided alternative to walking the zoo on your own, and it stays downtown rather than sending you 4.9 km north. Two caveats we would want told to us: 44 reviews is a modest sample, though 4.86 across them is the strongest score of anything in our Chicago catalogue, and its child pricing stops at ten, so an eleven-year-old pays the adult fare.

Check dates and price

The other one is the product that comes up when you search for ZooLights, and it is the one that excludes it. The eATLAS scavenger hunt sells itself in its own description with "Every December, ZooLights brings thousands of visitors to see the zoo at night festively decorated for the holiday season", and then lists Zoo Lights under its exclusions. It is a daytime app hunt: the zoo closes at 5 p.m. and ZooLights opens at 4:30. Its listing is also useful corroboration of the point in section 02, because it says of the zoo itself, "There is no charge for admission". We have not given it a card, here or anywhere: 4.0 from 3 reviews is not evidence of anything, good or bad.

05Every night of the season

Six closed nights inside a 45-night season is not unusual. What is unusual is which six, because half of them are not holidays at all.

3 of the 6 closed nights are consecutive Tuesdays in early December: 1 December, 8 December, 15 December. There is no fourth one, so a Tuesday later in the month is fine. If you are in town for a few days in the first fortnight of December and had pencilled this in for the quiet midweek evening, that is the night it is shut.

In the other direction, it is open on New Year’s Eve and on New Year’s Day, and it runs to 3 January 2027. That is later than any of the three Christkindlmarkets, which is the other thing that opens on 20 November 2026 and which finish on 24 or 31 December depending on which one. Between New Year and 3 January, ZooLights is the last of Chicago’s Christmas events still standing.

06The four free Mondays, and the two that are not

“ZooLights has free Mondays” is true and, for most visitors, useless. Here is why.

The free nights run out on 14 December. Every free Monday is before the holidays. The two Mondays when a visitor is most likely to be in Chicago, 21 December and 28 December, are the two the zoo names as exceptions.

They also need booking. Free reservations are released one week in advance at 11 a.m. Central, and the ticket is still per person. So the free Monday is a real thing if you live here or if your trip happens to fall in late November, and it is not a fallback you can rely on in the third week of December.

Three nights of the season are not normal admission at all. There is a members-only preview on 19 November, a sensory-friendly night on 24 November where the lights are kept static and the music low, and an adults-only evening on 10 December that runs later, 6:30 to 10 p.m., for over-21s. Those are separate tickets, and a standard ticket is not valid for them.

07The small print

None of this is hidden. All of it is on the page you buy the ticket from, and all of it is the kind of thing people find out afterwards.

The refund line is worth reading twice, because it combines badly with the weather. ZooLights runs in rain and in snow, tickets are nonrefundable either way, and a Fixed Date ticket cannot be moved. Chicago in December does what it does, and what the weather is actually like has the NOAA normals for the month. A $7 ticket is a cheap gamble on a January-grade evening. Four $20 ones are not.

The pet rule is the one that catches locals rather than visitors. Lincoln Park Zoo allows leashed dogs through much of its grounds on an ordinary day. During ZooLights it does not, service animals aside.
