01The short version
If you are visiting Chicago, go to Daley Plaza. It is 818 metres from the Bean, it opens every day at 11 a.m. from 20 November 2026, and it is the one with twenty-nine years behind it. The other two are worth knowing about for two specific reasons, both of them about dates rather than atmosphere.
If you are here after Christmas, Daley Plaza is shut and Wrigleyville is not. And if you were thinking of the Aurora one, check the day of the week before you drive an hour, because it opens Thursday to Sunday.
02The organiser contradicts itself
This is worth a section because it explains why half the internet is unsure about this year's dates. On 29 September 2026, the Christkindlmarket's own FAQ page answers the question "Which locations do you have in 2026?" like this:
"The location and opening dates for 2026 are not published. Please stay tuned!" That page was last modified in 28 January 2026. Directly above it, still unedited, sits the 2025 answer: We are delighted to announce the return of its cherish holiday tradition for its 29th season at Daley Plaza in Chicago, its 4th year at RiverEdge Park in Aurora, and, after a one-year break, its return to Gallagher Way in Wrigleyville.
Meanwhile the three location pages on the same website, all modified in August 2026, publish the full 2026 season with opening hours, special hours for Thanksgiving, and closing times for Christmas Eve. Nothing is missing from them.
There is even a third version. The Daley Plaza page's own meta description, the line Google shows underneath the link, says the market runs "from November 22nd" and calls it the 28th Anniversary, while the body of that same page says 20 November 2026 and the FAQ calls 2025 the twenty-ninth season.
We are not pointing this out to be clever. If you searched for the dates, found the FAQ, read that nothing was announced and gave up, the answer was three clicks away on the same site. That is the entire reason this page exists today rather than in November.

Three things in that table decide a visit, and none of them is obvious from any list we found.
Gallagher Way runs to 31 December 2026. Everyone assumes a Christmas market ends at Christmas, and two of these do. The Wrigleyville one closes on Christmas Day and then carries on to New Year's Eve. If your trip falls in that week, it is the only one of the three that exists.
RiverEdge Park opens thursday to sunday only. It is also 63.8 km from downtown, which is about 60.3 minutes in a car with no traffic. A wasted Tuesday there is a wasted afternoon.
Gallagher Way does not open until 3 p.m. from Monday to Thursday. Combine that with the organiser's own advice that weekday mornings are the quietest time to visit, and there is exactly one market where that advice can be followed: the one in the Loop.

Free admission is the one worth dwelling on, because it puts this in a small group. Most of what Chicago promotes at Christmas has a price or a residency condition attached, as we found writing about free museum days and what is actually free in Chicago. This one is genuinely free to anyone who walks in, and it has been since 1996.
If you are building a winter trip around it, the ice rink at Millennium Park is four minutes from Daley Plaza and free to skate on if you bring your own skates, and when to go has what January actually feels like.

When is the Christkindlmarket Chicago 2026?
All three locations open on 20 November 2026. Daley Plaza in the Loop and RiverEdge Park in Aurora both close on 24 December 2026. Gallagher Way in Wrigleyville runs a week and a half longer, to 31 December 2026. Those dates come from the three location pages on the organiser's own website, read on 29 September 2026. Its FAQ page, on the same site and the same day, still says the 2026 dates are not published.
Is the Christkindlmarket free?
Yes, at every location, and it has been a free event since it started in 1996. It is run by German American Events LLC, a subsidiary of the German American Chamber of Commerce of the Midwest. Food, drink and anything you buy from the stalls obviously are not free, and some special events are ticketed, but walking in and looking costs nothing.
Which Christkindlmarket location is best?
Daley Plaza if you are visiting Chicago, because it is 818 metres from Millennium Park, about 10 minutes on foot, and it opens every day from 11 a.m. Gallagher Way if you are here between Christmas and New Year, because it is the only one still open. What time does the Christkindlmarket open?
It depends which one, and this is the detail that catches people out. Daley Plaza opens at 11 a.m. every day. Aurora opens at 11 a.m. but only Thursday to Sunday. Gallagher Way does not open until 3 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, and 11 a.m. from Friday to Sunday. So a Tuesday lunchtime works at Daley Plaza and at neither of the other two.
Is the Christkindlmarket open on Christmas Day?
No, and only one of them is open after Christmas Eve at all. Daley Plaza and Aurora both finish on 24 December 2026, closing early that day at 4 p.m. Gallagher Way is closed on Christmas Day itself and then reopens, running to New Year's Eve, when it also closes at 4 p.m.
Why does the Christkindlmarket website say the 2026 dates are not published?
Because its FAQ page has not been updated. That page was last modified in January 2026 and still carries a 2025 answer about locations next to a 2026 answer that says nothing has been announced. Meanwhile the three location pages, modified in August 2026, carry the full dates and hours. Both are the organiser's own website. If you searched the FAQ and gave up, that is why.
How do I get to the Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza?
Walk. It is at 50 W Washington St, Chicago, IL 60602, which is 818 metres from Millennium Park, about 10 minutes. Gallagher Way is in Wrigleyville, 6.4 km north, roughly 12.9 minutes by car. Aurora is a different proposition entirely at 63.8 km.
When is the Christkindlmarket least busy?
Weekdays, especially morning and early afternoon, which is the organiser's own advice rather than ours. Worth combining with the hours above: a weekday morning only exists as an option at Daley Plaza, since Gallagher Way does not open until three and Aurora is shut Monday to Wednesday.
Diego FresnoI have not been to the Christkindlmarket: I was in Chicago in July 2025, when Daley Plaza is a plaza. So this page does not tell you what the Glühwein is like. What it does is open the organiser's own pages one at a time, which turned out to be worth doing, because its FAQ says the 2026 dates are not announced and its location pages have had them since August. The three differences in section 03 came out of reading all three pages rather than the one everyone reads.
