Chicago Thanksgiving Parade 2026: It Steps Off at 7:40 a.m.

The 92nd Chicago Thanksgiving Parade runs from eight to ten on the morning of Thursday 26 November, and it steps off at twenty to eight. Its organiser says in writing that this is one hour earlier than the last few years.

Short answer

  • Thursday 26 November 2026. The parade runs 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and steps off at 7:40 a.m. from Ida B. Wells Drive and State Street.
  • The organiser states that is one hour earlier than recent years, so a remembered time is probably wrong.
  • Free from the street. The VIP zone is $80 plus a $2 fee and sales close on 25 November, 11 a.m..
  • It is not the Magnificent Mile parade, which is five days earlier, in the evening, on a different street.
  • At 7:40 a.m. you are nearer November's average low of 34.1°F than its average high of 48.4°F.

01The short version

Thursday 26 November 2026. Be on State Street by half past seven. The parade steps off at 7:40 a.m. from Ida B. Wells Drive and State Street and runs until 10 a.m.. Watching costs nothing.

If you have been before, check that time again. It has moved.

02The hour that moved

This is the whole reason to read anything about this parade rather than turn up. The organiser's own FAQ, read on 20 October 2026, says this:

"The Chicago Thanksgiving Parade is held on Thanksgiving morning from 8AM-10AM. Thursday, November 26th, 2026. Step off from Ida B. Wells and State will be at 7:40AM. This is ONE HOUR earlier than the last few years."

One hour earlier, in the organiser's own capitals. A parade that used to step off at twenty to nine now steps off at 7:40 a.m.. If you arrive at the time you remember, the front of the parade has already gone past you and you are watching the back of it.

03Two parades, five days apart

Chicago holds two free downtown parades in the same week and they have almost nothing in common except the word. People go to the wrong one.

Timeline of two Chicago parades in the same week, read from each organiser. The Chicago Thanksgiving Parade is on Thursday 26 November, stepping off at 7:40 in the morning and running from 8 to 10 a.m. along State Street. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival parade is on Saturday 21 November at 5:30 in the evening along North Michigan Avenue. They are five days and about ten hours apart. The Thanksgiving parade now steps off at 7:40 in the morning, which its organiser states is one hour earlier than recent years.

Each read from its own organiser. The highlighted row is the one this page is about. Both are free to watch.

One is in the dark on Michigan Avenue and the other is after breakfast on State Street. If you want the evening one with the floats and the fireworks, that is the Lights Festival and it is covered on our page about Chicago's Christmas lights, along with what every other display costs.

04What it costs, and what $82 buys

Standing on the pavement is free, and that is how almost everyone watches it. There is exactly one paid option and the organiser sells it directly.

Read from the organiser's own ticket listing on 20 October 2026. The service fee is charged on top and is shown at checkout rather than in the headline price, which is why the total is the row worth reading.

The deadline is the part that catches people. Sales close on 25 November, 11 a.m., which is the day before, so this is not a decision you can make on Thanksgiving morning while standing in the cold. The organiser also says plainly: Seating is LIMITED. It will sell out.

The VIP zone is at 111 N State Street, in front of Macy's, which is the same building as the Walnut Room and its Great Tree, seven floors up. If you are paying $82 to sit outside it, the tree inside is worth knowing about.

05What you will actually be standing in

Search for the weather and you will get November's average high: 48.4°F. That number is true and it is not the one you need.

The parade is at 7:40 a.m., and at that hour Chicago is nearer its average low of 34.1°F. The gap between the figure people look up and the figure they stand in is 14.3 degrees.

NOAA/NCEI 1991-2020 normals, station USW00094846 (O'Hare), read on 18 September 2026. These are thirty-year normals for the month rather than a forecast for the day, so treat them as what is usual and not as what will happen.

And 1.8 inches is the November snow normal, so snow at this parade is ordinary rather than remarkable. None of that is a reason not to go. It is a reason to dress for dawn rather than for the afternoon, which is the mistake the published high encourages.

06Questions people actually ask

What time is the Thanksgiving parade in Chicago?

It runs 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Thursday 26 November 2026, and it steps off at 7:40 a.m. from Ida B. Wells Drive and State Street. The organiser states in its own FAQ that this is one hour earlier than the last few years, so a time you remember from a previous visit is probably wrong. Read from chiparade.com on 20 October 2026.

Is the Chicago Thanksgiving parade free?

Watching from the street is free, and that is how almost everyone sees it. The only paid option the organiser sells is the VIP zone, at $80 plus a $2 service fee, so $82 a head. That buys stadium-style seating, warm drinks, gifts and private restrooms in front of Macy's, and nothing about the parade itself.

Where is the best place to watch the Chicago Thanksgiving parade?

The route is State Street, running from Ida B. Wells Drive and State Street. The organiser's own recommendation for a guaranteed seat is its VIP zone at 111 N State Street, in front of Macy's, reached from Washington & State or Randolph & State. If you are not paying, anywhere along State Street works, and the practical constraint is not the view but the hour: you are standing outdoors before eight in the morning in late November.

What is the weather like in Chicago on Thanksgiving?

The figure usually quoted is November's average high of 48.4°F, and that is not the number that matters here. The parade is at 7:40 a.m., and at that hour you are nearer November's average low of 34.1°F. That is a gap of 14.3 degrees between what you read and what you stand in. November also averages 1.8 inches of snow, so snow is normal rather than remarkable. Thirty-year normals from NOAA/NCEI 1991-2020 normals, station USW00094846 (O'Hare).

How much are VIP seats at the Chicago Thanksgiving parade?

$80 plus a $2 ticket service fee, which is $82 all in. The organiser says "Seating is LIMITED. It will sell out." and its listing closes sales on 25 November, 11 a.m., the day before the parade. So it is not a thing you can decide on Thanksgiving morning.

Is the Chicago Thanksgiving parade the same as the Magnificent Mile parade?

No, and this is the mistake worth avoiding. They are different parades five days apart. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is on Saturday 21 November at 5:30 p.m. along North Michigan Avenue, in the dark, with floats and fireworks. The Thanksgiving parade is on Thursday 26 November 2026 at 7:40 a.m. along State Street, in the morning. Turning up on the wrong day or the wrong street is easy because both are free, both are downtown and both are called a parade.

Is the Chicago Thanksgiving parade on TV?

Yes. The organiser describes it as nationally televised, which is the honest alternative if standing on State Street at twenty to eight in a Chicago November does not appeal. It is the 92nd edition.

How do I get to the Chicago Thanksgiving parade?

State Street is served by several 'L' lines and the route is in the middle of the Loop, so transit is the obvious way in. A 1-Day CTA pass is $5 and covers the whole day, which matters on a morning when you will want to get somewhere warm afterwards. Driving is the expensive option and parking downtown on a holiday morning is its own problem.

Wrote and checked this page

I have not been to this parade: I was in Chicago in July 2025. What this page gives you is the organiser's own FAQ and ticket listing read line by line, which is where the changed step-off time came from, stated by them in capitals and easy to miss. The temperature figures are the same thirty-year normals this site uses elsewhere, applied to the hour the parade actually happens rather than to the afternoon. The one thing I would check again closer to the day is the VIP sales deadline, because a listing can be extended.

The date, the running time, the 7:40 a.m. step off, its location, the statement that this is one hour earlier than recent years, and the description of the parade as nationally televised all read from chiparade.com's FAQ on 20 October 2026 and quoted exactly. The VIP price, the service fee charged on top, the inclusions, the viewing location, the access points and the sales deadline from the organiser's own ticket listing, same day. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival day, time and street from themagnificentmile.com, measured earlier for our Christmas lights page. Temperature and snowfall are NOAA/NCEI 1991-2020 normals, station USW00094846 (O'Hare), read on 18 September 2026. NOT verified and therefore absent: the full parade route beyond its start point and street, which the organiser does not publish on the pages read; whether a grandstand or seating exists outside the paid zone; and any forecast for the day itself, which no thirty-year normal can give.
